SEO is the work that helps your website appear more often and higher in search when future customers look for what you offer. Ads bring people in only while you pay for them. SEO takes longer to build, but pages can keep bringing visitors for months and years.
This guide to SEO for small business explains in plain language what SEO is made of, how to get your site found, how long it takes and how to tell solid work from empty promises.
How search works
Google does three things: it finds pages, adds them to its index and decides which to show for a given search. That leads to three questions about your site:
- Can Google find and read your pages?
- Do they answer what people are looking for?
- Why should search trust you rather than a competitor?
These match the three parts of SEO: technical, content and off-site.

Technical SEO: making sure you can be found

- Important pages are open to indexing and listed in your sitemap.
- The site runs on HTTPS and works well on phones.
- Pages load quickly: see our articles on speed and sales and PageSpeed optimization.
- There are no broken links or duplicates of the same page.
- On a multi-language site, language versions are linked to each other.
You can check indexing for free in Google Search Console. It’s worth starting there either way.
Content: pages that answer searches
First collect the searches: what people type when they look for your product or service. The Keyword Planner in Google Ads shows search volumes for free. Then assign searches to pages.
- Commercial searches (“ecommerce website development”) lead to service and category pages.
- Informational searches (“how to choose a CRM”) lead to articles, and articles lead on to a service.
- Local searches (“web design Dubai”) lead to city or country pages.
Every page needs a clear title, a search description and copy that really solves the reader’s question. Just adding keywords doesn’t work: Google explicitly warns about content written for search engines rather than people.

Off-site signals: why people can trust you

Links from other sites remain one way to show search that you’re known. It’s best to earn them: useful content, mentions in industry media, partners and directories your customers actually use. Buying links in bulk breaks Google’s rules and can cost you rankings.
For a local business, your Google Business Profile matters too: address, opening hours, reviews and photos.
How to get your site found: an action plan

- Connect Search Console and analytics, and set up goals for enquiries and purchases.
- Check the site’s technical health and fix critical errors.
- Collect searches and assign them to pages.
- Improve service and category pages first: they’re closest to a sale.
- Write articles that answer customers’ questions and link them to your services.
- Work on mentions and links.
- Each month, see which pages are growing and strengthen them.
If you’re still planning your site, build SEO in from the start: see our guide on how to make a website for business. If you’re rebuilding, read our site migration checklist: this is where traffic you’ve built up can be lost. The OfficeNear website shows what a structure in several languages looks like.
How long SEO takes

Don’t expect quick results. Google’s guide for businesses says it usually takes four months to a year to make improvements and see a possible benefit. The time depends on competition, the site’s age and the amount of work. If you need enquiries this month, use ads and build SEO alongside them.
How to vet an SEO provider

Be wary of these promises:
- A guaranteed first place on Google. Nobody can guarantee that, as Google itself warns.
- Reports that only show rankings. Look at enquiries, sales and traffic to your important pages.
- Secret methods and buying lots of links.
- Refusing to give you access to Search Console and analytics.
A good provider explains what they’re doing and why, agrees a plan with you and shows results in data you can access.
